Last month I blogged about the changes to the Google algorithms, mentioning that the next generation of the Google Penguin update was fast approaching. Last week Matt Cutts, head of Google’s web spam team, posted a video (below) about the update confirming that it will be rolled out within the next few weeks.

As the video explains, the second generation Penguin is aiming to cut link spam even further and should definitely not be ignored. Matt Cutt’s explains that we should all be constantly trying to  “Make a great site, that users love, that they will want to tell their friends about, bookmark, come back to, visit over and over again, all the things that make a site compelling”

Take time in the next coming weeks to ensure that you are following the rules, this way it is unlikely that the algorithm changes and the Penguin 2.0 update should affect you significantly.

Link building is key for successful SEO, but it is vitally important that you understand the types of sites that are linking to your company website. There are some free resources online that allow you to do this, and then you can remove the spam sites that show up using the Google disavowal tool.

Adult sites, websites that are irrelevant to your own, and sites that are built exclusively for the purpose of SEO are all BAD and you will most definitely be hit by Penguin if these types of sites are providing link backs to yours!

You should also try to focus on natural link parameters. When you are building links try not to over optimise the anchor text.

The video explains quite a few changes that are going to be rolled out with the Penguin 2.0 update, but as long as you are following the rules, and delivering high quality content along with your SEO efforts then the algorithm changes shouldn’t have an immediate effect on your site. However, as Matt Cutt’s sums up brilliantly:

“If you’re hanging out in black hat forums and trading different types of spamming package tips, that sort of stuff, then it might be a more eventful summer for you”
